I'm working through some issues regarding background checks and truly need your input on your procedure. Do you wait until each  applicant's background check is cleared before you bring them on board? Thank you!

Yes, we wait for the background check, but it usually only takes one day to  come back.  During that time we have them get their TB-skin test done.

I used to do them after the orientation (which is only done after an interview), but I've started waiting until they schedule their first day.  In addition to them not making it to orientation, I've had some drop out before starting.  With the State Police, I get an answer in 24-48 hours.

Yes, I wait for results of background checks, but I live in a small town and I know or some other volunteer has made a recommendation.  Each is handled on a case by case bases.  If I know nothing about the applicant I wait for the background check but if i am aware of the applicant I move the process.

One thing that I am strict on is - the volunteer cannot began the training process until his/her TB is completed.

I have volunteers complete the health screening (proof of immunizations and PPD) and background check before I meet with them. If they are volunteering in our Adult Day Health , Pediatric Center, or Childcare programs, I allow them to begin volunteering with the cleared background, but I also run a Child Abuse and Neglect background check.

I don't require but the turn around is fast enough that I usually get the results back before the volunteer starts the placement.  However, I do tell the potential volunteer that they can be dismissed any where along the way if the background prevents them from volunteering.

Yes we have them complete the background check as the very last step of the process and will not let them start until we get it back.
