How do other hospitals handle outside volunteer groups coming into the hospital setting e.g. Parents Reaching Out who support high risk prgenancy moms; Mended Hearts who support heart patients. Do these groups come into your facilities through the vol. dept. and undergo your volunteer oreintation or do they enter through their organization? If they are outside the volunteer dept, do they have some type of hospital orientation as well?

    Thank you!

The mended hearts volunteer go through orientation just like my other volunteers.  There is some of the orientation that I do not give them that the others have since they are only here for about an hour and they set their on day & time that they come to volunteer.

The mended hearts at our facility do go through orientation and do have a placement discription.  Our hospital does the same for the eucharistic ministers and a pet therapy group (pet service is new to us).

We too are dealing with this and actually have meetings with our legal/corporate compliance department this week.  We are seeing more and more groups want to come in and perform services or give in kind donations but they do not want to be affiliated with our hospital program.

We require Mended Hearts visitors to be registered as a volunteer with our program, and therefore complete all volunteer requirements.  We will do the same for our pet visitation group.  The only volunteers who do not complete the full requirements are groups who come to do caroling at Christmas, and our non-traditional knitters who do not perform service in the hospital.

Anyone who comes into our hospital in a volunteer capacity clears both Volunteer Services and our Occupational Health department. We have a HeartMenders program internally which supports patients and their families at the time of cardio-thoracic surgery.
