Does anyone have programs set up to transition volunteers into when it's time for them to "retire" from their service area(s)? If so, what types of activities might you have for them to come together to do periodically, how do you utilize them on a regular basis in non-traditional roles/ways, how often, etc....

I am also interested in this information.  I do not have a program in place.

    Thanks,

    Patty

Many years ago, at an SHVL conference, this topic was discussed and one hospital's "solution" was to invite/transition volunteers to a group that did mailings, etc.  We really liked that and have had a "Lunch Bunch" group in place for many years now.  The group meets once a month.  It does not solve everything but it is a helpful tool for us and provides us with "something" to offer those volunteers that can no longer continue in their former positions.  I can forward anyone information about how we solicit projects/jobs from departments that the Lunch Bunch handles.

We have a program called SuperStars which is funded by the Auxiliary.  These "retired" volunteers are invited back each month for a luncheon and a program.  I will be glad to share our information with you if you will provide me with your email.

At Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida, we have identified "retired" volunteers as those who have given a minimum of 10 years as a volunteer.  In a "retired" status, these volunteers are invited to our special events, such as our Fall Volunteer Open House (November), Spring Volunteer Recognition (April) and events associated with Volunteer Appreciation Week.  Our "retired" volunteers also receive our quarterly newsletter.
