Episodic Volunteers - What is Your Process

Does your hospital/organization work with episodic volunteers?  Volunteers who don't have regular schedules, but come in periodically to help with special projects, community events, one-time projects, etc.

What hospital mandatories are they required to complete?

Are they only allowed to work in certain areas (i.e. no patient contact duties) or assist with certain projects?

    Thanks

We call them non-traditional volunteers. They stay only in public areas and have no direct contact with patients. They are only required to sign a confidentiality agreement.

We have a few people who volunteer for fund raisers or special projects/events for which other departments request assistance. All of these volunteers are required to complete the same orientation as our regularly scheduled volunteers.

    Jamine,

Do you have a sample service description or policy detailing the parameters of these nontraditional volunteers?

    Thank you,

We call ours non-traditional as well. We determine what items they need to complete based on their service area and do have some variation on a case-by-case basis for special circumstances.

Boards, Advisory councils, Special events, etc.

      1)      Complete appropriate application
      2)      Complete volunteer orientation
      3)     Obtain a photo ID badge from Volunteer Services
      4)     Sign in/out at meetings or events

    Exception:

Volunteers participating in community events only.

      1)      Read and sign agreement and confidentiality form upon arrival to event
      2)      Temporary badges given at the event
      3)     Sign in/out at the event
