We provide meal vouchers that are worth $6 and volunteers must provide 4 hours of volunteer service on the day of use to be eligible. These vouchers are budgeted through Volunteer Services. Cashiers in the cafeteria, at one of our food kiosks or barista stand accept these as payment and volunteers are required to pay the difference in cost.

    Hi Erin,

Thanks for your response, how many volunteers do you have?  Is this separate budget line from your volunteer recognition budget?

We provide a $6 snack voucher for adult volunteers. We do not offer the voucher to teens or college students. We generally say they need to complete one 3-4hr shift to be eligible for the snack voucher, but we don't verify hours. They must get the voucher on the day they are volunteering and are only allowed to use one per day. (We had a few volunteers who were keeping vouchers and they buying $20+ worth of food and "groceries"). We don't allow that. All snack vouchers are paid out of Volunteer Services budget.

Our volunteers are allowed to charge up to $6 for a single meal each day they are here.  I do not monitor the number of hours they volunteer in order to get this meal.  They can't go through again and use "unused" funds if their meal is under $6.  They simply need to be wearing their name tag to get this benefit - no vouchers.

Volunteer meals is a line item in my budget and I get a report from the secretary in Dietary with the total charges for the month.

    Hi Jackie,

Last year we had approximately 600 volunteers at our main campus (which is the only location that has a cafeteria). The meals come out of our food budget, which includes volunteer meals, food costs for our recognition events, and a daily coffee cart that staff volunteers use to distribute coffee to the parents of our patients. Our recognition budget is used for non-food recognition costs like gifts and cards. Please let me know if I can provide any additional information!

Our facility runs approximately 200-230 volunteers.  210 beds; 22 acute rehab; 66 long term.  19 independent physician practices.  Some volunteers elect to eat and some do not.  The budget is calculated for the "all" would eat.  Gives me some breathing room.  The line item for the G/L is "food" so anything that I do that includes food I break out to this line item including  food for all recognition events, bereavement meals, special meetings, treats for the volunteers, recruiting candy treats, etc.  Tangible gift items such as holiday calendars, pens for training sessions comes out of supplies non medical.

We did away with meal tickets a couple of years ago and working with our Food & Nutrition Dept., developed a log sheet where volunteers sign for their meals in either our cafeteria or coffee shop.  They are allowed up to $6 and anything over that amount, they are responsible for paying.  They must be in uniform with their ID badge.  They need to volunteer a minimum of 3 hours and can eat before or after their shift or take a "to go" box home, but they can only get the meal on the day that they volunteer.  They are also entitled to one free drink in our coffee shop the day they volunteer. If it is a Starbucks drink, they are allowed up to $1.75 and must pay any amount over that.  If volunteers come in to eat on their day off from volunteering, they get the same hospital employee discount in the cafeteria and coffee shop.
