What is your minimum age for a volunteer to independently transport a patient and/or visitor?  I'm currently at 18, but allow Juniors (14-17) who are accompanied by an adult volunteer.  Would like to lower age to 16 for independent transport.  thanks, Chris

After training and a check off list, our junior volunteers transport at age 14 and up.  They transport patients being admitted and discharged only, not between departments, etc.

We allow all of our teens (14-18) to transport as long as they are able and are trained properly.

We do not allow volunteers of any age or ability to push patients or visitors in a wheelchair.  This decision was made a number of years ago by administration after the requirements for paid transporters included lift training and CPR.

We do not allow volunteers to transport patients if they are on a gurney, have IV's, drain tubes, or catheters. They do not assist patients into beds or lift patients.

Our Junior Volunteers, age 14 - 18, can only transport visitors who need wheelchair assistance.   They each have wheelchair training in their initial orientation.

It has been awhile since this topic has been discussed and I would like to know if your program allows volunteers to transport patients by wheelchair.  Currently we allow our volunteers to transport patients by wheelchair from our Same Day Surgery area to our patient discharge area.  They cannot lift patients in/out of the wheelchairs or vehicles.  Also, our volunteers in the front lobby can assist patients/visitors that need wheelchair transport and our volunteers in Admitting can transport patients to their patient room to be admitted.  If the volunteer does not have a comfort level transporting because of the patient's condition or size, then they alert staff or call our patient transporter team.  What is your policy?

My responses are the same as the previous ones. We allow volunteers (age 14 and older) to transport patients entering the building only.  Volunteers do not discharge patients or provide transportation to those who have had a procedure - either within or to the exits of the hospital. Volunteers in special entry areas are the only ones trained to do wheelchair transports.

We do allow our Jr vol 14-18 to transport after they have a short training class.
