Hospital Employee Volunteerism

This is an ask the experts question:

Our system is looking at ways to incentivise our staff (employees) to volunteer their time in the community.  Ideally, they would volunteer to serve with some of our own outreach programs, but it could be any volunteerism (Habitat for Humanity, Red Cross, Meals on Wheels, etc.).

Does anyone have a program or initiative or even just some advice on how this works at your facility?  Is your volunteer department involved or is it through your HR office?

We call that community volunterism our HOT Team (stands for Hospital on Top). Any staff person, paid or non-paid, can participate. Events involving non-clinical staff are handled by our Marketing/Public Relations while those requiring nursing personnel are handled by Community Education. We get "rewards" (meal or yogurt tickets) based on the number of events worked. Each quarter, anyone who's worked an event is eligible to win prizes or even a day off with pay. Then there's a big reception during Hospital Week with neat prizes, again based on total number of hours given. Also a drawing at the same time -- one lucky person gets a 3-night trip anywhere in the continental US.

Our hospital has a community outreach department that works on coordinating hospital employees for specified volunteer events.  We do not have an open ended volunteer program.
