    Good afternoon, SHVL members  -

I may be looking for a proverbial needle in a haystack, but does anyone have a music therapy/therapeutic musician volunteer position?  Many times, I see that this is a separate hospital department.  If there are some music therapy volunteer positions out there, would you mind to share your position descriptions with me?

    Thanks much!

Our program is not an official therapy program, but we do have volunteer musicians. We have some who play a piano in our cancer center atrium, and one who visits patient care units to play guitar and sing. If this is what you have in mind, I've attached the position description for our Symphony for the Soul volunteer musicians.

Our program is basically the same as Jan Verbeck's.  We have volunteer musicians and most are limited to stringed instruments or piano since they are softer than brass instruments.  We have a baby grand piano in our hospital lobby and also a violinist that plays outside our surgery waiting room and she sometimes plays in our hospital lobby.

A few years back I had a gentlemen come in as he was pursuing his certification as a music practitioner.  It became quite the education for me for the difference between music practitioner vs music therapy.

I developed a position description and arranged for him to visit units.  It consumed a great deal of my time to arrange which patients would be appropriate on the day he was here.  I have attached the description I utilized.  Hope it is helpful.

Over the past several years, we have had two people in our music program that were also pursuing their certification in music therapy which is quite different from our volunteer musicians!
