We started a program we call Compassionate Hearts about 3 years ago.  It is open to current volunteers in our program (they must have been volunteering for at least 3 months before being considered) and hospital employees in good standing.  Initially the program was designed for NODA patients and those in critical care whose family members need respite to run errands, go out for a nice dinner, go home to take a shower, etc. (patients are not necessarily ones whose death is imminent).  Volunteers were not being called.  We have redesigned the program to now also include patients having extended hospital stays that may be lonely, a little anxious and just need someone to come and visit and talk to them.  We conducted an additional training recently with two very dedicated employees who have passion for this program - our Palliative Care Nurse and our Hospital Chaplain.  We have done massive education with nursing and when I speak at New Employee Orientation (which includes lots of new nurses), I always explain this program to them.  We are now getting more calls than we ever have before.  Our Nursing Supervisors take referrals from the nursing staff on patients that would benefit from a Compassionate Hearts volunteer visit and since the supervisors are here 24/7, they have the list of volunteers to call for this service.  Feel free to contact me for more information.
