Allyson,
At this time we do not use VICNet for scheduling, however to deal with the large number of new volunteers, we have a mass interview event, every month but December, and use volunteers to interview while staff does the placement. So when the new volunteer leaves, all of the following have been completed: online orientation and immunization records already done prior to mass interviews, during the interview event-photo for badge, interview for placement, placement, sign up for background check, and drug screen paperwork, drug screen done on-site, TB test. We bring in 15 folks every 30 minutes.
However with our average age of a volunteer now approaching 26, and people requiring more flexibility in their volunteer schedule, we are looking at this and also retraining staff that we may go to training folks for a particular position and letting them sign up for that position when time allows. Best example as we are surrounded by an academic campus is that a class gets cancelled unexpectedly and the volunteer would like to come in during that time.
The danger of this is that you will have a few people who cheat on reporting their hours. We will probably catch most, but not all.
