Projects to Boost Morale!

    Message # 11040264

Someone in our organization reached out to me in regards to ideas about boosting morale with hospital staff.

Is there any projects or programs anyone is doing through the volunteer office to assist with boosting morale?

Thank you for any ideas or recommendations!

Nicole - I was just invited to a meeting Monday, we have several ideas floating around. I’ll post after the meeting what the committee decide to do.

I had gotten some ideas from other peers, and have been organizing some treats and give aways.  Our HR Department had some leftover holiday gifts, so we drew names to give some away, and I plan to do that once a month until the end of the year.  On the alternate weeks, we've planned some treats.  We had ice cream bars one day and will have popcorn and a drink next week.  It might be as simple as a roll of Life Savers with a sign "You're a real lifesaver".  We plan a month of free soup and a week of free oatmeal.  For those employees offsite that can't participate, I sent out a small giftbox that had a candle and lip balm from Etsy with a note letting them know we are thinking of them too.

Thank you for these ideas! We have started to plan some treat giveaways and meal donations for the staff.

We are doing a picnic in the parking lot; served up by administration.  Food trucks for the night staff.

Gift shop is doing an employee appreciation coupon for 20% off for the month of October.  (hoping to boost sales while giving back to the employees)

Thank you all for sharing your ideas!!

We helped HR last month with a snow cone project. We have a local truck that came out and provided free snow cones to the employees. They had the syrups out on 2 tables so there wasn't a traffic jam there. The employees could pick up for everyone in their department so everyone could have a snow cone. Since we have 10 different facilities the snow cone truck went to all of them on a different day. The small clinics were invited to come to the larger facilities. It worked out really well and the employees loved it. HR and NMHS Health Care Foundation paid for the snow cones

We are also doing a "You have been Boo'ed" event in October. 10 departments will start out with Halloween buckets with candy for their department. Then they refill the bucket with candy and pay it forward to department. We have cute signs saying We have been Booed.

The week of Thanksgiving last year, Volunteer Services did a cake walk for the employees. We had it for 2 days and we had the walks set up every 20 min. and the employees signed up for the time slots. We could have 12 people per walk.  We marked the X's on the floor -6 ft apart to social distance, in a huge circle and the X's were all numbered.  We played the music and then stopped it like musical chairs. We drew a number out of the hat to see who won. Then the winner got to draw from another bucket to see which  cake/ pie/cookies/other dessert  they won. It was so much fun. The employees were dancing and cutting up...20 minutes of relaxation from the floor. This year we have a spinning wheel so the cakes/desserts will all be listed on the wheel. This will be fun too. We gave away 32 desserts and we paid for them with our proceeds from our Masquerade Fundraiser. Employees are already asking to sign up for this year's cake walk. We are tossing around the idea of doing one the week of Christmas too.

Not through the volunteer office, but Employee Engagement is  doing work around this book: https://www.appreciationatwork.com/5-languages-appreciation-workplace-improve-employee-engagement/. In action it looks like this:

    • Acts of Service - encouraging (in some cases requiring) non-clinical staff to help where possible in areas that are short staff (some examples: information desk, gift shops, materials management and getting supplies out to the floors. Volunteers putting in extra hours where they can!

    • Quality Time - Senior leadership does a 15-20 minute update briefing 2x week Tue/Thur just to update everyone and to answer questions. This is broadcast via YouTube, so available for playback anytime.

    • Words of Affirmation - encouraging staff to send each other e-thank you notes

    • Tangible Gifts - all employees get a card with 4, $5 discounts in the cafeterias (total value $20); off site employees are getting food trucks; remote workers at home are getting a basket of food items - they are paying for this through Philanthropy funds

    • Appropriate Physical Touch - massage therapy and pet therapy (our volunteers!) available for staff

    Hope this is helpful!

    Sara
