    Hi Everyone-

I received an application from a Dr from India who is seeking to volunteer in our Research Department. He is not a US Citizen, does not have a SS# and does not have a work visa. Does anyone have any experience in dealing with this? Our HR department has asked our COO but we are awaiting a response on whether or not we can accept them. Thanks!

We do not accept folks for volunteering if they do not have a social security number.

Without a SSN we cannot run the background check, therefore, we cannot accept.

I have had this happen as well.  Our policy reads the application must be completed in full.  It also reads a background check must be completed.  With out a soc. sec. number the above cannot occurr.

It appears it would be good practice to have the same process as your hospital employees have, an exception should not be made, it opens the door for other issues.

We have not allowed anyone to volunteer without a SS number. Most of it is becuase they can not access our systems without one.

I'm the odd one out here.  I do take foreign nationals without social security numbers. We are a university town and use many of the foreign students as volunteers.  We work with the faculty, accepting those students who are recommended, and placing them in many many areas.

Our VP HR made the decision to move forward as each has been checked by various federal agencies before coming here, is performing well in a university setting and is championed by faculty.  My other volunteers enjoy the atmosphere they bring, they quickly become "family", and  he feels we are doing a little something to improve our reputation in the world.

I currently am at a low with just Nigeria, Kazakstan, Russia and Canada represented, but as far as student participation without a social - I vote a huge YES.  The worst thing that has ever happened was a group that came in full native costume and brought a hibachi and food to cook for the other volunteers on their shift.  Fire in the main lobby is never a good option :)

We also have a lot of international college students and our HR Director will let me accept their Visa or

work permit.  Their schools have accepted them and we use that in lieu of background checks.

We are in the middle of a university campus that also contains six health schools and a large hospital/reseach facility.  We accept international students and adults as volunteers based upon VISA status, etc.
