Volunteer Programs for Special Needs

    In the past we have had small groups (2-3) of students in the special needs programs from local high schools volunteer with a coach an hour or two a week. Do any other hospitals do this or something similar? Please tell me about your program!

    If anyone with special needs wants to volunteer, do you require an adult "coach"?

    What types of job duties do they have/ what departments? 

    Any other details you'd like to share!

    I had a local college inquire with me for their PROJECT SEARCH LIFE PROGRAM students to volunteer. They had 12-15 students per year.  They wanted me to have a volunteer mentor the student daily.  This program did not come to play; but, they did go through our human resource department.  These students are now here daily for a semester. The college department heads (2) are onsite daily and each student is mentored by an employee.  Some of the  roles; maintenance, environmental service, dietary, wheelchair transport, warehouse.  We now employ several of these students. (one works directly under my department).  I have two amazing individuals who volunteer regularly.

    We have Project SEARCH at NMMC also. This goes through our local high school. They have a coach on campus during the school year to work with these students. Each student has a mentor in the department they are working. So far, we have had great success with these students. When they are here, they get paid for the work they do. This year NMMC hired 2 of their students to be permanently employed with us. It is a great program and has tremendous benefits to our staff and the students.

    We also have Project Search during the school year.   We have 8-10 students.  There is 2 full time job coaches that are here with them daily.  We do use this as a hiring tool also.  Win/Win.
