Facility Dog Programs and Pet Therapy

I have 2 questions related to Pets:

    1. Our school of nursing and our facility is wanting to look at the facility dog option but I am not sure where to start. Anyone have a successful Facility Dog /Program and willing to share how to get started, costs, etc.

    2. Our current Pet Therapy program is in high demand and we spend tons of time trying to coordinate visits when requests come in. However, our current email the request seems to leave us as the middle man and requires multiple communications. Has anyone used the secure text options used by your facility when communicating with healthcare providers? We would like to set up our pet's in a text message group and have departments be able to put the request out securely and the pet team that can meet the need respond, taking us out of the process. Anyone have anything that is working for them?

    Thank you

Julie,  Our therapy dog program is set up on a regular schedule.   Each dog has it's owner and an escort that goes with them for crowd control, encounter counts and hand sanitizing.  If the owner cannot make it they communicate to their escort partner as well as myself so I can note my calendar of them being off.    We do get a few special requests, but, with a limited number of handlers, it is difficult.  One of our dogs is an amputee and has been asked to be on-call for any patients who may be pending such a procedure.

Julie, we have a fantastic facility dog program and now have 6-7 dogs (I lose count). If you'll email me at alex.seblatnigg@shepherd.org I'd be happy to connect you with one of our team leads.

does anyone allow "dogs in training" for their certification to come visit in your facility as a "trainee"?
