    Hi All,

I have a high school student who is a volunteer with us. She would like to volunteer with Physical Therapy. This would be slightly different than volunteering with some our other departments because there would be direct observation of patient care (their therapy). Does anyone have any guidelines they follow that is specific to HIPAA and patient privacy, above and beyond a standard confidentiality agreement and HIPAA acknowledgement form for volunteers knowing about specific health information and observing care?

    Hi Colleen,

I have volunteers that assist in physical therapy settings. They assemble patient packets, call appointment reminders when not automated, sanitize equipment, rewind limb dressings, stock supplies, etc. If they want more than that (such as shadowing a specific PT person throughout their day), then they must complete shadowing application through our Corporate Education department.

    Thanks,

Our Physical Therapy Department will only accept college students that are in Pre-Physical Therapy or Physical Therapy School.  However, we do have Junior Volunteers in several other departments where they are privy to patient information. They do HIPAA training and their parents along with them must sign the confidentiality statement and agreement.
