For those of you who have pet therapy programs, what programs do you accept certifications from and are they national or local?   When evaluating a new certification program/agency, what criteria do you look for i.e. type of certification, insurance provided, etc.?

We use TDI  (Therapy Dogs International)  and ATD ( Alliance Therapy Dogs)

We have used TDI since the implementation of the program about 20 years ago.   We just started allowing ATD about 3 months ago.   The training process and insurance are the biggest areas we look at.   TDI has "uniforms"  the owners/handlers wear khaki slacks and a white polo with the TDI logo.  The dogs have identifying bandana's.   ATD does not have specifics, so i was very clear with our standards of dress.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

We use a local organization called, WAGS - Wonderful Animals Giving Support, but only for dogs. This pet therapy group was approved by our administration and infection control and is written into our policy. All of the volunteers are required to go through the Volunteer program and given a schedule of when and where to visit. The insurance was evaluated, and details required for them to be certified. All the handlers keep their documentation on their person while visiting and we also keep record of this in their file in the volunteer office; updated vaccinations, proof of certification, evaluation.

Do any of you require to go through annual behavioral exams or do you require them only to show proof of still being in a therapy organization

We require proof annually.   Both TDI and ADT recertify every year.  We require a copy and annual Vet check up and shots.
