We are looking at possibly shuttling visitors or offering valet parking. I need information from any of you who already have this service. One of the hurdles I've had in the past is from a liability stand point. So if you're using volunteers for these services, how did you proceed through legal? Also, is there a cost to running the program, and what sort of competencies do you require of your volunteers who help with this? The length of time that you've had this service and the types of vehicles used would also be helpful. Thank you advance for your help! This is a service we've been trying to add for awhile so I need all of the research that I can get for my upcoming meeting. Thanks again!

We provide a shuttle service at our main hospital. We have two vehicles, a van and a multiple seat golf cart style vehicle (depending on weather and time of year determines which we use). We have a gas card that the volunteers who drive have individual pin numbers to use. Cart Volunteers must have a clean driving history and be at least 18 years of age. They drive the cart around the parking lot and offer rides to those arriving and we also have a phone in the lobby that dials the cart cell phone number directly when it is picked up for anyone who needs a ride to their vehicle upon departure.

We have two vans that we alternate each month.  They were purchased by our Auxiliary and they do pay for the gas, but maintenance is taken care of by the hospital since they were donated to the hospital.  Our Security personnel take the vans to be filled up regularly at night.  We have had the service since 2003. Drivers must submit to a motor vehicle check through our insurance company and we also have them provide results of their eye exam from their eye doctor every 2 years.  They also must pass a driving simulator test through our PT Dept. (this is at no cost to the volunteer.  Our hospital absorbs the cost).  We are also transporting more off campus (approved through our insurance carrier) since we have public transportation patients that may have to come from our Cancer Center to the hospital for an additional treatement/test.  Carla, you can email me for our checklist on the training and service description.

    Bed size - 255 beds

Phys. Practices - 3 buildings on our campus and 2 have physician practices, but we have parking in front of each building, so van doesn't need to transport too many of these people to these physician's offices.  If they need to be transported off campus to physician's offices/Cancer Center because they came by public transportation. etc., and found out they were at the wrong place, we have permission to transport them through our insurance carrier since they will consider that part of our hospital campus.

Van drivers are volunteers and they report to us in Volunteer Services.

Since they drive hospital owned vehicles (vans were purchased by Auxiliary and donated to the hospital), they hospital has liability coverage on the vans/drivers.

Attached is our service description and much of what we posted in 2014 is the same.
