We have an ongoing problem of wheelchairs disappearing.  this can be due to many factor...departments hiding them in their area so as to always have one or visitors walking away with them.  How do you keep up with your wheelchairs?

Our volunteer guild has slowly started purchasing STAXI chairs and they don't tend to disappear :)

We lock them up at night. That helps a little bit, but the information desk staff has a key in case one is needed and sometimes the borrowed chairs don't get returned. It's amazing, though, how many departments suddenly locate a chair when we tell them we can't discharge their patient because we don't have one!

Do any of you require people to "sign-out" the wheelchair they borrow from your Information Desk areas where you have volunteers?  If you do, has it ever been a PR issue for any of you?

We had the same problem, so we marked all of our wheelchairs with "Volunteer Department" in large bright letters, which helped.  This past year, we started investing in Staxi chairs - they don't disappear, they can fold up and so they don't get stored in storage rooms on units and can't be put in trunks of cars.  It's amazing - they even make it back to our Information Desks because no units want them.  They are very easy to use and can hold small and very large people.

I have these same problems and thought they were going to be relieved when our foundation purchased 25 STAXI chairs for the volunteers to use at our 3 main entrances.  We were able to keep them until our transporters found out how easy they were to use and now they use them all over the hosp.  One thing that has helped some is that our IT Dept. put a tracking device on each STAXI chair.  Now I can pull up the program and see what area the chair is in and how long it has been there.  The only problem is that most of them are in an area for only a short time so you know they are being used.  The STAXI chair is the way to go though b/c they are heavy and don't fold up to get taken off in cars.  Another plus is that you don't end up with chairs missing the foot rest or the brake not working b/c the parts are not don't come off.

We used to have this problem too.  Our engineering department locked the wheelchairs in the open position, so they are more difficult to take offsite in a car.  Of course if you have a pick-up truck they can still be stolen.  Our incidence of missing wheelchairs though has just about stopped.  I suggested purchasing staxies, but so far it has not happened.

Good luck with the STAXI's.  We invested in them after one of our volunteers championed incessantly.  We had a unique program name put on them, prominently, and everyone has just loved them.  While they do not fold, they do fit nicely in the vans with extended roofs, and they do disappear - proving that if you want something badly enough you'll find a way!
