Does anyone else place volunteers in the OR areas? (I.e. ORs, Anesthesia Workrooms, PACU, offsite surgical centers.) We do currently, and I am looking to benchmark if our volunteer tasks, or Service Area Agreements are on par with other hospitals.

    Thanks!

I have had volunteers in these areas off and on in the past, although I do not have any there now.  This is the assignment description:

To provide service to patients and family members, supporting but not supplementing nursing staff.
    A. Volunteer should report to the charge nurse on arrival to unit, change into surgical scrubs and hair covering, and look for assignment on the OR board.
    B. Run errands for the staff, including but not limited to picking up stock from various departments.
    C. Transport patients to and from the OR with assistance.
    D. Assist transporters in restocking supplies in the OR.
    E. Assist in setting up the OR's between cases by making clean beds and movement of clean supplies.
    F. Assist secretary as instructed, such as making charts or copy machine duties.
    G. Strip, clean, and make unoccupied stretchers
    I. Delivers messages as directed.
    J. Run errands and pick up equipment and medication from the dumbwaiters.
    K. Communicate appropriately with patients and families.
    L. Direct visitors as needed.
    M. Make sure to do the following:
    i) Report to charge nurse on arrival and departure.
ii) Check with the charge nurse before doing an activity you have not been instructed to do.
iii) Wash hands before and after contact with patients.
    iv) Be conscientious.
    v) Conduct yourself in a professional manner.
    N. Do not do the following:
Repeat any information you learn about a patient or family including patient names.
Handle any kind of specimens - including taking specimens to or from the lab.
Perform any function involving access to confidential information regarding the patient's condition.
    O. Make sure to do the following:
    i) Sign in at the Volunteer Workroom before reporting to unit.
ii) Call Volunteer office if you are unable to work the scheduled time.
iii) Conduct yourself in a professional manner at all times.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS: The Surgery Volunteer is responsible to the Director of OR/PACU/OPS and the Surgery Unit Manager.  Assignments will be coordinated with the Education Coordinator.  The volunteer is in daily contact with co-workers, managers, patients, families, medical and clinical staff.
