are you rounding?  Who do you round to? How often? How do you do it?

We have volunteers that help with our Administrative Reps...

Organize daily patient visits on nursing units along with Administrative Reps,

-During patient visits, try to obtain the satisfaction level in the following areas: Nursing Care Services, Food Services, Environmental Services.

-Special requests and concerns, are referred to appropriate personnel, i.e. Unit Director, Charge Nurse, Unit Clerk, or call Administrative Representative for assistance

-Document all problem concerns on Daily Worksheet and inform the appropriate Admin. Rep. as soon as possible

-Leave all daily worksheets with Volunteer Services.

We try to round on all our volunteers.  We use a specific set of questions.  The information we have gathered has been very useful.  We share it with the departments where the volunteers are placed and some good changes have been implemented by those departments because of the feedback received.  We also send personal thank you notes to any associate or volunteer that has been recognized by the volunteers during rounding. Rounding is time intensive but the feedback and goodwill has been invaluable.

My assistant and I round, but not as much as we should.  We have set a goal of rounding each day, alternating days.  It is amazing to me the issues they have made us aware of and we have been able to solve these "barriers" to help them do their jobs better.  Also, it is a wonderful way to communicate and educate on issues that may come up while we are visiting with them.  I report quarterly to my immediate supervisor (VP of HR) our issues that have been resolved as a result of rounding with the volunteers.

There are a few key service areas that I check in on regulary (almost daily). However, I do not have a formal rounding schedule/protocol in place for volunteer areas.
