we are 18 months out from our Joint Commission Survey and just this last week completed a CARF Survey (specific to rehab hospitals). One of the questions that was ask about volunteers was fingerprinting. I was looking on the join commission website and got a bit overwhelmed and could not find anything about fingerprinting volunteers. Since CARF follows Joint Commission in some of its guidelines, I was wondering:

    1.  If any of you require findgerprinting on your volutneers ?

    2.  If so, is it at the expense of the hospital or at the expense of the potential volunteer?

    3.  If you do fingerprint your potential volunteers, do you do it on all or just ones in specific areas and what what areas are they in ? What areas are they in ?

I found the site I posted above which seems to have a pretty good summary of what you are asking about.

As Jamine's website referenced - it is state specific.

In Florida, our volunteers are not clinic and they are therefore not mandated to have a level II background screen. However, in Florida AHCA requires a level II screen for any volunteer who spends more then 10 hours per week or is unsupervised with a "vulnerable patient population" (elderly and psychiatric). Our volunteers do neither, if they do neither they we are able to substitute two free online screenings - the national sex offender registry, and the Florida Career Criminal Offender registry.

We mirror our HR Department policies when we onboard volunteers.  At this point, we are only required to do the background checks (charged to our department), abuse registry, sanction checks, drug screens and appropriate vaccinations.

We drug screen and background check volunteers the same as we do for employees, but no fingerprints.  Let me say that teens aren't background checked because their records would be frozen.  Once out of that range, a background check is done.

When placing adults at our child care center we fingerprint in addition to our normal routine.  This is the only area we do prints.

We do not fingerprint. We do a background check only on adults.

    We do not drug screen.
