Our hospital refers to these patients as "red lined" (individuals who do not want to be identified as being a patient). We do not accept the flowers. We tell the florist, "we are unable to accept the flowers because we do not have that patient on our public registry." This holds true for phone calls and cards as well.
When patients are admitted to the hospital the individual registering the patient is very clear when they choose to be "red lined". It is explained if someone phones they will not be connected, if flowers are sent they will not be delivered if mail is sent it will be returned to sender. ETC.
