Does anyone advertise open volunteer positions online and fill them much as you would for a job position?  Meaning you advertise, take applications by an announced date, interview, select and orient the new volunteer?

I ask because I feel this could be a more effective way to recruit long term volunteers (since they are applying specifically for that position) and save on the costs of drug and background checks as well as staff time.  Of course before doing would have to look at legal issues, etc.
