Volunteer uniforms

    Dear Colleagues,

    I am seeking information about your dress code policy for volunteers in your Medical Center/Hospital.  This subject has come up several times in the past year, so I have  appointed an Ad-Hoc Committee (consisting of board members and general membership) to evaluate and make a recommendation to our Auxiliary Board.  I would love to have information from each of you on your current dress code policy for your volunteers.

    Currently our female volunteers wear the traditional coral smock and our men wear a burgundy vest. 

    Copy of your policy and/or your input on this subject is greatly appreciated.

    All volunteers at Children's of Alabama are in a uniform that they purchase.  We offer three options:  rugby shirt to be worn with khaki or white slacks, Lab jacket (long sleeve for those who are cold in air conditioning and same slack option) and scrubs.

    By far scrubs are the most popular across the board - teens, college students and adults.

    We do not allow any scrubs on volunteers. It's too easy to mistake them for staff.  We supply our volunteers with a white polo,logo and "volunteer" embroidered on the sleeve. They also wear a "Floyd Green" (hospital color) vest or jacket. The volunteer must supply their own kaki or white pants and closed toe shoes.

    Our adult volunteers have a choice of a royal blue jacket (embroidered with Hospital name and Volunteer Services), ladies jacket is 3/4 sleeve, men's is long sleeve. They also can choose a golf shirt either long leeve or short sleeve, and the ladies have one more option it is a tunic vest. We ask they wear solid color slacks (kakhi,navy, black) . The teens wear a white golf shirt also embroideed , with the same choice of slacks. We charge all $10 (we pay half). I think our volunteers really look nice.

    Should update my post to say all uniforms are monogrammed to clearly identify that the person wearing it is a volunteer.

     

    Sorry, I made an assumption there.

    Our volunteers remain in the traditional coral with a maroon vest on our gentlemen.  Our group met and decided to remain with the traditional colors feeling the coral in specific is a less popular color in street clothing and can therefor be identified easily when a staff member or visitor wants assistance.

    Past that, they must conform to the facility codes regarding professional and appropriate clothing under the smock or vest.
