Here are something's I found on the Internet.
Today, I received a letter from the National Association of Professional Women. It said that I had been selected for a free membership in the organization because of my gift basket business. I looked at the website and it seemed pretty nice. It it appeared to have a lot of things to help promote women in business.
However, something about the whole thing just didn't feel right. I started doing some research and found that it is a scam. Once you send in the card accepting the free membership, they call you. They tell you there is a small charge (under $10) to cover service fees. Once they get your credit card number, they bill you almost $800. One person, who had this happen, was told that the conversation had been recorded and that there was no way she could not have understood. In the end, she is still waiting for a refund.
If you happen to get something from this organization, tear it up!! I'm so glad my gut told me to be leery. It's so sad that people clever enough to come up with a scheme like this can't put their skill toward something good.
From what I can tell, they ARE a scam. I have my own home business (gifts, etc) and I got the same "Welcome/Free Membership" packet. I signed up online. No where in the packet or online did it list any costs. And believe me, I HUNTED for it!
Today, 3 weeks later, I get a call from them saying they needed a few more questions answered (basic stuff, nothing they couldn't already find with a simple Google search of my business, so I answered them). She says 'congrats, I've been accepted!' Then she tells me about the 2 different "membership levels of $800 or $500". What?! I told her no, I don't pay for anything over the phone. (That's just me, been burned before.) Told her to send me the info and I will look it over. She then tells me she can authorize a "special" $89 plan for me for the first year to look it over. I tell her still no. She then starts asking why not, am I questioning them as a professional association?! Again, I tell her, no, I don't pay for ANYTHING over the phone, not even my insurance - NADA. And she proceeds to hang up on me.
